Do I pay for my own license? If so, when do I pay for it?

Yes.  Licensees are responsible for the out of pocket expense to get an actual paper license.  Additionally, every two years you will be required to complete continuing education and pay a renewal fee to maintain an active license.  Purchasing your professional license  is not only an important investment, but a critical milestone along your path to a rewarding career in the beauty industry. As soon as you become eligible to take your written exam, you can pay the license fee online at: https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/apply/  See below for a step-by-step example:

1. Log onto the TDLR website by clicking here:   https://www.tdlr.texas.gov/apply/

2. Click on "Apply for a License" located at the top left of the screen

3. Choose “Barbering and Cosmetology” from the drop down menu

4. Scroll until you find “Cosmetology Operator” or “Esthetician” depending on which program you are in.

5. To the right, click on “Begin your application.”

6. Click on “Barbering & Cosmetology”

7. Click on "New License Application

8. Click on “Practitioner’s License”

9. Choose either “Cosmetology Operator” or “Esthetician (including Barber technician)” depending on your program

10. You will then provide the information requested & you will need your School Student Permit /TDLR number.

11. You will then click "Continue" which will take you to the payment page & to the completion of ordering your license.

Note:  graduates that pay for their license fee after taking passing their practical exam will have to wait until their license arrives to begin working in a licensed position.
